Bluespaces Trout
Our project is based around the newly discovered Brown Trout.
Essex & Suffolk Water and the Roding Farm Cluster have an opportunity to work in partnership with the Environment Agency and local organisations to improve 7.2 km of Bluespaces along the River Roding. The River Roding is London's third longest river, but largely flows through an agricultural area of East Essex before reaching the city. Trout spawning Grounds have been discovered at the northern extent of the Roding whilst adult fish have been located at the southern end of the project.
Areas of the River Roding through this stretch are neglected, with the river very overgrown and silted, reducing the availability of trout habitat, and footpaths are also overgrown with views of the river impeded. This group of landowners aims to take a landscape approach to bring greater benefits to wildlife, water and soil across the River Roding catchment and wider West Essex area. . This project will be delivered by 8 local landowners who are farm cluster members, alongside local woodcarvers and tree surgeons to bring benefits to water, wildlife, and the local economy. The project seeks to improve bluespaces through improving habitats for Brown Trout, and encouraging access to the river to create a more enjoyable space for visitors.
This will be achieved by:
Creation of areas of dappled shade to support Brown Trout along a 3000m stretch of the river
Clearance of overgrown footpaths, the restoration of footpath markers and installing signage
Installation of 3 benches
Provision of two new interpretation boards
Community volunteer events to remove bankside debris
Installation of swift boxes/owl boxes and deadwood habitats, and monitoring of the spruce bark beetle
Establishment of a watercourse buffer
Creation of a reed bed to reduce runoff from Farm
Water quality testing kits and a turbidity monitor have been purchased in order to check water quality
